Years later, Hamel discovered that his stepfather – who had become involved with another family – had been sentenced to death for torturing a toddler to death in Alameda, California. “I wasted my childhood with this guy,” said Hamel, who returned to Labrador as a teenager to be with his biological father. Hamel remembers having to move away from the edge of a swimming pool to escape his father-in-law, who was holding him underwater the man pulling a lock of hair from Hamel’s head because he was using it to hold it underneath.Īnother time, Hamel said, the man harassed him around the house with a machete.
